Union Home Minister Amit Shah has firmly rejected the demand for his resignation from the Congress, following his controversial remarks about Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Shah’s statement, calling the frequent invocation of Ambedkar’s name a “fashion,” triggered a major political uproar, with the Opposition launching a scathing attack during the ongoing winter session of Parliament.
Speaking at the BJP headquarters, Shah mocked Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge’s resignation demand, asserting that even if he stepped down, it would not change the fate of the Congress. “If Kharge feels happy, I’ll do that. But the Congress will stay where they are for at least 15 more years. My resignation won’t help,” Shah said.
The controversy began when Shah, during the debate on the “One Nation, One Election” Bill, remarked, “It has become a fashion to say Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar… If they took God’s name as many times, they would have got a place in heaven.” His comments quickly sparked outrage, especially from Congress, with Kharge demanding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi sack Shah from his Cabinet if he truly respected Ambedkar’s legacy.
At a press conference, Kharge further criticized Shah’s comments, saying, “Amit Shah should apologize, and if PM Modi truly believes in Dr. Ambedkar, he should be sacked by midnight. Otherwise, people will protest. They are ready to sacrifice their lives for Ambedkar.”
As the controversy intensifies, the political showdown continues over the respect for Dr. Ambedkar and the growing rift between the BJP and Congress.
