A 19-year-old woman from Uttar Pradesh has alleged that a married man raped her multiple times, and when she sought police help, the officers “persuaded” her family to marry her to the accused due to her pregnancy.
The accused, Sajid Ali (around 35 years old), from the Kotwali area, befriended the woman, who lived in the same locality. He frequently visited her house, and on March 10, 2024, he allegedly raped her while she was alone at home, recording the assault, as per the FIR filed, said Superintendent of Police (SP) Meenakshi Katyayan.
When the woman threatened to report the assault, Ali reportedly used the video to blackmail her, threatening to post it online. Out of fear, she remained silent, and the abuse continued, resulting in her pregnancy, the police officer added.
Upon noticing physical changes, the woman’s parents confronted her, and she disclosed the incidents. On September 20, 2024, the family approached the police to file a complaint, but the police allegedly persuaded them to have the woman marry Ali, citing her pregnancy. The woman claimed the marriage was conducted without a proper investigation and against her will.
In October, the woman discovered that Ali was already married and lived with his wife elsewhere.
On November 26, the woman gave birth to a stillborn child at a private hospital. After enduring months of mental and physical abuse, she submitted a written complaint on January 3, 2025, seeking action against Ali.
A case has been registered under section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code. The woman’s statement has been recorded, and a medical examination has been conducted, police said.
