Transgender Person Appointed Guest Lecturer in Karnataka University
In a historic first, Renuka Pujar has become the likely first transgender person to be appointed as a guest lecturer at a university in Karnataka. Pujar, who completed her post-graduation in Kannada from Vijayanagara Sri Krishnadevaraya University, joined the university’s Kannada department at the Nandihalli campus (PG Centre) earlier this month. This appointment marks a significant milestone for the transgender community, particularly in the field of education, as Pujar’s journey is a testament to resilience and the power of support from family and academia.
Renuka Pujar, 27, completed her MA in Kannada in 2022 after transitioning in 2017 while still pursuing her undergraduate degree. She spoke about the challenges she faced, acknowledging the difficulties of her journey, but also highlighting the crucial role that support from her family and university played in her success. “I’m very happy. After a lot of struggle, I have reached this stage. The university has helped me a lot,” she said. The university’s supportive environment allowed her to continue her studies with determination, ultimately leading to her appointment as a guest lecturer.
Pujar, a resident of Kurugodu in Ballari district, further emphasized the importance of education for transgender individuals. “I like teaching and want to pursue a PhD and become a professor. I want transgenders to pursue education,” she said. Her aspirations go beyond her current position; she hopes to inspire others in the transgender community to follow her lead and pursue higher education and professional careers.
The selection process for the guest lecturer position was rigorous, with thirty candidates applying for the role. According to university officials, Pujar stood out due to her qualifications, good marks, and her strong performance in the interview, which led to her selection. Her appointment is considered a significant breakthrough, not only for the university but also for the wider society, which often marginalizes transgender individuals.
Pujar’s appointment serves as an inspiration, showing that with the right support and determination, barriers can be overcome. She has set an example for other transgender individuals, proving that they too can succeed in academic and professional spaces, traditionally dominated by cisgender people. This achievement is not just a personal victory for Pujar but also a victory for the transgender community, signaling that inclusion and equality in education and employment are achievable goals.
Renuka Pujar’s story is one of courage, determination, and the transformative power of education. It paves the way for future generations of transgender individuals to pursue their dreams and contribute to society in meaningful ways.
