Hemant Soren, the leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), took the oath of office as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand for the fourth time today, following the decisive victory of the INDIA bloc in the recent state assembly elections. The swearing-in ceremony was held at Moradabad Ground in Ranchi, with top leaders from the INDIA Opposition alliance in attendance.
Key figures such as Rahul Gandhi (Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha), Mallikarjun Kharge (Congress president), Akhilesh Yadav (Samajwadi Party chief), Mamata Banerjee (West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress leader), Arvind Kejriwal (Aam Aadmi Party leader), and Tejashwi Yadav (Rashtriya Janata Dal leader) were present to witness the event.
Hemant Soren was the only one to take the oath today, as discussions continue among the Mahagathbandhan allies regarding the allocation of cabinet positions.
The recent election results, declared just a few days ago, saw the JMM-led alliance win a significant 56 out of the 81 seats in the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly. Hemant Soren’s JMM, which contested 41 seats, secured 34, while Congress won 16 of the 30 seats it contested. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and CPI(ML) won six and four seats, respectively.

Hemant Soren’s Political Journey
Hemant Soren, 49, began his political career with a brief tenure in Rajya Sabha before being elected as an MLA in 2009. He served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Jharkhand from 2010 to 2013, when JMM was in an alliance with the BJP and Arjun Munda was the Chief Minister. In 2013, Soren became the Chief Minister after JMM formed an alliance with Congress and RJD.
In the 2014 state elections, the BJP came to power, and Hemant Soren took over as the Leader of the Opposition. The JMM-Congress alliance triumphed in the 2019 elections, leading Soren to begin his second term as Chief Minister.
Earlier this year, Soren faced legal troubles when he was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case. He has consistently denied the charges, accusing the BJP of using investigative agencies for political purposes. Soren resigned ahead of his arrest, and his close aide, Champai Soren, temporarily took over as Chief Minister. After spending over six months in jail, Soren was granted bail. Upon his return to politics, Champai Soren resigned from his position, citing alleged humiliation within the party.
Kalpana Soren’s Role in the Political Scene
Hemant Soren’s legal battles also brought his wife, Kalpana Soren, into the political spotlight. She played a significant role in campaigning for the Opposition while her husband was absent. Kalpana Soren also contested the Assembly elections and was elected as an MLA, marking a notable entry into Jharkhand’s political landscape.
As Hemant Soren takes office for a fourth term, the focus will be on the distribution of cabinet positions and the future course of action for the JMM-led alliance in Jharkhand.
