New Delhi: In a significant relief for spiritual leader Sadhguru and the Isha Foundation, the Supreme Court on Friday dismissed all legal proceedings initiated in the Madras High Court over claims that two women had been “brainwashed” into joining the ashram in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, and were being unlawfully detained.
The case was brought forward by the father of Geeta and Lata, who alleged that his daughters were being denied contact with their family. However, a bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud rejected the petition, ruling that both women were adults and residing in the ashram of their “own free will.” The court emphasized that the dismissal applies solely to this specific case.
The court also acknowledged a separate, ongoing case involving allegations against a doctor at the ashram, who has been charged with child abuse, but clarified that it would not affect this decision. Additionally, the Supreme Court criticized the Madras High Court’s handling of the habeas corpus petition, calling the court-ordered police raid on the ashram “completely inappropriate.”
