Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and approximately 20 other protesters were detained by the Delhi Police during a demonstration outside the Ladakh Bhawan on Sunday, according to officials. The group, which included around 20 to 25 individuals who were on a hunger strike alongside Wangchuk, was taken to Mandir Marg police station for their actions.
In preparation for the protest, the police had deployed heavy security to ensure law and order was maintained. Some of the protesters contended that they were not engaging in a protest but were simply sitting peacefully.
A senior police officer clarified that the protesters did not have permission to gather outside the Ladakh Bhawan. “They have filed an application to hold a protest at Jantar Mantar, which is currently under consideration. They are not allowed to protest at any other site. We have detained a few individuals, who will be released soon,” the officer stated.
Wangchuk and his supporters marched to Delhi from Leh, advocating for the inclusion of Ladakh in the sixth schedule of the Constitution. Earlier, on September 30, they were detained at the Singhu border and were released on the night of October 2. The group is calling for a meeting with prominent leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
