Kolkata : The Supreme Court by DY Chandrachud today rejected a request to transfer the trial of the RG Kar rape and murder case outside West Bengal, while also reprimanding a lawyer who claimed that the people of the state were losing faith in the police and judiciary. In response to the plea, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud stated, “Yes, we have transferred cases in situations like in Manipur, but we are not doing that here. There will be no transfer.”
The bench, which also included Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra, reviewed the status report filed by the CBI, which is investigating the horrific rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August.

“We have examined the sixth status report filed by the CBI, which shows that the Additional Sessions judge has framed charges under Sections 64 and 103 of the Indian Penal Code. The next hearing is scheduled for November 11. Since the investigation is ongoing, we will refrain from making any observations. An updated status report should be filed in four weeks,” said Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, who is set to retire this Sunday.
The bench also reviewed a report from the National Task Force, which was formed to recommend measures for ensuring safe working conditions for healthcare staff in hospitals. The Chief Justice directed that the report be circulated to the Chief Secretaries of all states and Union Territories for their suggestions. He set a deadline of three weeks for this process to be completed.
Senior Advocate Indira Jaising, representing doctors in Bengal, raised some concerns, to which the Chief Justice instructed her to submit her suggestions formally.
