The final farewell for Ratan Naval Tata, a beloved industrialist known for his kindness, took place today at a Mumbai crematorium with full State honours. The ceremony was attended by a host of India’s most influential figures, including prominent politicians, celebrities, and business rivals from the Tata Group, such as the Ambanis, Adanis, and Birlas.
Home Minister Amit Shah represented Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was on his way to Laos for the ASEAN-India and East Asia summits. Last night, Mr. Modi praised Mr. Tata as an “extraordinary human being.” Alongside Mr. Shah were Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, along with his deputies, Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar.
Earlier today, Ratan Tata lay in state, draped in the national flag, at the National Centre for Performing Arts in Nariman Point before being transported to the crematorium in Worli, approximately 12 km away. Thousands gathered along the streets to bid farewell to the humble “chhotu,” a Mumbai native who transformed the Tata brand into a global powerhouse.
The occasion saw not only the country’s leading politicians but also its most prominent actors, sportspersons, and business tycoons paying their respects. In honour of this admired business leader and philanthropist, Maharashtra has declared a day of mourning, reflecting the deep admiration for his simplicity, sincerity, and humanitarian efforts both in India and abroad.
