Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress leader, continued to make waves with her controversial handbag statements in Parliament. A day after her “Palestine” bag triggered a political storm, she appeared again with a new bag emblazoned with the slogan, “Stand with Bangladeshi Hindus and Christians.” This new statement on her bag was a call to attention regarding the alleged persecution of minorities in Bangladesh, particularly Hindus and Christians, following the political instability in the country earlier this year.
Priyanka Gandhi’s bold fashion choices have sparked both support and criticism. Her “Palestine” handbag, which featured a watermelon — a symbol of solidarity with Palestine — had already garnered sharp reactions from the ruling BJP. In Parliament, she called for the Indian government to take diplomatic action and engage with Bangladesh to ensure the safety of religious minorities in the country. “The government should raise the issue of atrocities on minorities, both Hindus and Christians, in Bangladesh,” she urged, highlighting her concern for the protection of religious minorities.
This move was also a response to the BJP’s criticism of her previous handbag. Priyanka Gandhi firmly rejected the BJP’s accusations, pointing out that the debate over what she wears reflected patriarchy. She stated, “Who is going to decide what clothes I wear now? That’s typical patriarchy.” She also reaffirmed her beliefs on social media, dismissing the BJP’s critique as irrelevant.
The BJP was quick to attack her choice of accessories, accusing her of “communal posturing.” BJP leaders questioned why Priyanka Gandhi, who had displayed solidarity with Palestinians, had not raised the issue of Bangladeshi Hindus more vocally earlier. BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya accused her of using the Palestine issue to gain political advantage and distract from domestic concerns.
Priyanka Gandhi, however, maintained that her focus was on the suffering of minorities and urged the Indian government to take action regarding the violence in Bangladesh. She also invoked her late grandmother, Indira Gandhi, recalling India’s historical intervention in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, which she framed as a stand for democracy and human rights.
Priyanka Gandhi’s stance has stirred a wider debate on the role of Indian politicians in international issues, with the opposition rallying around her message of global solidarity.
