In the 115th episode of his radio program Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the increasing threat of “digital arrest” fraud, cautioning people against falling victim to this scheme. He explained that these scams are conducted by criminals posing as government officials, describing them as “enemies of society” who are engaging in “fraud, deceit, and lies.”
Highlighting the importance of public awareness, PM Modi stated that no official entity conducts arrests or investigations over phone calls or video calls. “There is no system like digital arrest in the law. It is all fraud,” he emphasized.
To counter the rise in cybercrime, the Prime Minister mentioned that investigative agencies are actively collaborating with state governments. To enhance coordination, the government has set up the National Cyber Coordination Centre, aiming to combat these schemes and safeguard citizens in the digital space.
PM Modi urged citizens to be vigilant against calls from fraudsters impersonating officials from police, CBI, Narcotics, or even RBI, adding that these criminals often sound confident to instill fear and pressure victims into compliance. The PM elaborated on the tactics fraudsters employ, starting with gathering personal information to gain trust, creating fear by mentioning legal consequences, and applying time pressure to prevent victims from thinking clearly.
The PM shared the “three steps to digital security” strategy: Stop – Think – Take Action.
- Stop: When receiving a suspicious call, stay calm and avoid sharing personal information. Take a screenshot or record the interaction if possible.
- Think: Remember, no government agency will ever demand money or conduct investigations over the phone or through video calls. If you feel pressured, it’s a red flag.
- Take Action: Report the call to the cyber helpline at 1930, visit cybercrime.gov.in, or inform family or local authorities to help protect against further fraud.
He concluded by urging listeners to report suspicious activity to the authorities and take preventive steps to protect themselves and their loved ones from digital scams.
