Union Commerce & Industries Minister Piyush Goyal has stirred controversy with his recent remarks on Bengaluru, India’s renowned IT capital. Speaking at an event in Delhi, Goyal acknowledged Bengaluru as the “Silicon Valley of India” but suggested it was time for India to think bigger and expand beyond its current tech hub.
“We should aspire to go beyond. We should aspire to have our own Silicon Valley,” Goyal said, calling for the creation of a new township dedicated to fostering entrepreneurs, startups, and innovators. He proposed the involvement of the National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (NICDC) in developing this new space, envisioned as a hub for future disruptors and innovators.
While some have welcomed the idea of creating new innovation centers across the country, others view the statement as a challenge to Bengaluru’s established position as India’s tech capital, sparking mixed reactions within the industry and political circles. The proposal has reignited discussions about the future of India’s tech landscape and the need for more hubs of innovation across different regions.
