Assam continues its aggressive campaign against child marriage with the third phase of arrests. On the night of December 21-22, 416 individuals were arrested in connection with child marriage, as part of the ongoing crackdown. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Sunday that 335 cases have been registered as part of this operation.
The arrests are part of the state government’s broader initiative, which has seen multiple phases of action throughout 2023. In February 2023, 3,483 people were arrested, and 4,515 cases were filed. The second phase in October resulted in 915 arrests and 710 cases.
“The fight against child marriage continues. In the third phase of operations launched on the night of December 21-22, we made 416 arrests and registered 335 cases. Those arrested will be produced in court today. We are committed to taking bold steps to eliminate this social evil,” Chief Minister Sarma posted on X (formerly Twitter).
The crackdown has been a significant move by the state government to curb the prevalence of child marriage, a serious issue in Assam, with a focus on enforcement and legal action against offenders.
