Noel Tata has been appointed as the new chairman of Tata Group’s philanthropic arm, Tata Trusts, according to a report from ET Now on Friday. He succeeds his half-brother, Ratan Tata, who passed away this week at the age of 86.
With this appointment, Noel Tata becomes the 11th chairman of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the sixth chairman of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust. He is the son of Naval H. Tata and Simone N. Tata, and the half-brother of the late Ratan Tata.
Noel Tata was already a trustee of both the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust. Together, these trusts hold a substantial 66% stake in Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group.
Following Ratan Tata’s death, there was heightened attention on the future leadership of the Trusts. As the largest public charitable foundation in India, the boards of Tata Trusts were tasked with selecting a new chairman from among the current trustees, since Ratan Tata had not designated a successor before his passing.
