Over 200 senior doctors from hospitals in Kolkata and across West Bengal submitted symbolic ‘resignations’ in support of their junior colleagues, following a fast unto death initiated by some junior doctors on October 5. The West Bengal government stated on Saturday that these ‘mass resignations’ are generic letters and hold no legal significance.
Junior doctors have been protesting since the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August. In response to the indefinite fast being conducted by some junior doctors in Kolkata and Siliguri since October 5, over 200 senior doctors from RG Kar Hospital and other government-run facilities have submitted their ‘resignations’ this week. The number of doctors participating in the fast increased to ten, with two more joining on Saturday.
Several senior doctors clarified that their resignations are symbolic, emphasizing that they continue to treat patients and maintain healthcare services during the Durga Puja celebrations.
Alapan Bandyopadhyay, chief advisor to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, reiterated that the letters lack any legal authority.
