A businessman who was injured in a road accident in 2019 has been awarded a compensation of ₹31.39 lakh by the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) in Thane. Gopichand Shankar Patil, a 38-year-old man, was riding a scooter on Ghodbunder Road on March 13, 2019, when a speeding car knocked him down, leaving him with severe injuries. The car driver fled the scene, and was later booked for rash driving and other offenses under the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act.
At the time of the accident, Patil had an annual income of ₹5 lakh. He applied for compensation, claiming that the accident had caused him a 40% disability.
In its ruling on November 12, 2024, the MACT, under the chairmanship of Judge SN Shah, awarded Patil ₹31.39 lakh. The compensation included ₹25.65 lakh for loss of future income and ₹3.74 lakh for medical expenses.
The case highlights the long process of legal proceedings, as the victim had to wait five years for the compensation. However, the award provides a significant financial relief to Patil for the injuries and disability he sustained in the accident.
