Chief Justice of India: Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, who assumed office on November 9, 2022, bid farewell to his position today, marking the end of his two-year term as the 50th Chief Justice of India. On his final day in office, Justice Chandrachud addressed the ceremonial bench, acknowledging the reality that he would no longer serve as the country’s top judge, but expressed contentment with his tenure.
“I won’t be able to deliver justice from tomorrow, but I am content,” he said, reflecting on his journey.
In a light-hearted moment, Justice Chandrachud recalled a conversation with his registrar judicial the evening before his farewell. “When my registrar judicial asked me what time the ceremonial should begin, I suggested 2 pm, thinking it would give us time to wrap up pending matters. But I wondered to myself—will anyone actually show up at 2 pm on a Friday afternoon, or will I just be left talking to myself on the screen?” he said, bringing a smile to the courtroom.

Reflecting on his career, Justice Chandrachud compared the work of judges to that of pilgrims who arrive at the court each day with a sense of dedication and service. “The work we do can make or break cases,” he remarked, underscoring the weight of judicial responsibilities. He also paid tribute to the “great judges who have adorned this court and passed on the baton,” expressing confidence in the future of the judiciary under the leadership of Justice Sanjiv Khanna, whom he praised as a capable and able successor.
Addressing any potential missteps during his tenure, Justice Chandrachud offered a heartfelt apology, quoting the Jain phrase “Michhami Dukkadam,” which translates to “May all my misdeeds be forgiven.”
The courtroom was filled with gratitude as lawyers and members of the bar gathered to honor the outgoing Chief Justice, describing him as the “rock star” of the judiciary for his landmark judgments and contributions to justice.
Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who will succeed Justice Chandrachud as the 51st Chief Justice of India on November 11, expressed his admiration for his predecessor. “I never had the opportunity to appear in Justice Chandrachud’s court, but his work for the marginalized and the underprivileged has been unparalleled,” Justice Khanna said, acknowledging the legacy of the outgoing Chief Justice.
As Justice Chandrachud steps down, his legacy as a champion of justice, equality, and human rights remains etched in the annals of Indian judicial history.
