Israel-Palestine war 2024: The United Nations Security Council has called an emergency session on Tuesday following Israeli airstrikes on a displaced persons camp in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.
Rafah, located on Gaza’s southernmost border with Egypt, was home to more than one million people, nearly half of Gaza’s population, displaced from various areas of the territory. However, with Israel beginning a limited incursion into the region earlier this month, most people have fled once again.

Israel-Palestine war: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday dismissed the attack as a “tragic mistake.” The incident took place in Rafah in southern Gaza, setting off a fire at a camp where displaced Palestinians had sought shelter. Local officials said at least 45 people were killed in the attack, the Associated Press reported.

Israel-Palestine war 2024: 80% of people from Gaza fled their homes
Hamas launched the war with attacks on Israel on October 7, in which Palestinian militants killed about 1,200 people and captured about 250 hostages. According to the report, Hamas still holds about 100 hostages and the remains of about 30 others, while most of the rest were released during a ceasefire last year. About 80% of Gaza’s 2.3 million people have fled their homes. Severe hunger is widespread, and United Nations officials say famine is occurring in parts of the territory.
