Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri arrived in Dhaka on a one-day visit to hold talks with his Bangladeshi counterpart, Mohammad Jashim Uddin, and meet de facto Foreign Minister Mohammad Touhid Hossain.
Misri’s visit comes amid growing tensions between India and Bangladesh, which have worsened since August after the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Misri, who flew in on an Indian Air Force jet, is expected to discuss a range of issues with Bangladeshi officials, including India’s concerns over recent attacks on Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh. These incidents, including assaults on temples, have raised alarm in New Delhi. Misri is also scheduled to meet Bangladesh’s interim government head, Professor Muhammad Yunus, who assumed power following Hasina’s departure during a period of intense anti-government protests.
The bilateral relationship has seen a significant decline in recent months, exacerbated by the violence against minorities and the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das. Misri’s visit is aimed at addressing these issues and seeking diplomatic solutions to ease the tension between the two neighboring countries.
