Indian Constitution Is Not Sangh's Rulebook
Indian Constitution Is Not Sangh’s Rulebook : Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, in her speech during the Lok Sabha debate, strongly criticized the ruling BJP and its ideological ally, the RSS, accusing them of attempting to undermine the Indian Constitution. Responding to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s remarks, she emphasized the importance of the Constitution as a safeguard for citizens, calling it the “suraksha kavach” (protective armor).
She highlighted the opposition’s concerns about the BJP’s alleged plan to alter the Constitution, a theme echoed by her brother, Rahul Gandhi, and other opposition leaders.
In her speech, Ms. Gandhi Vadra also spoke about the tragic case of two children from Sambhal who had lost their father, a tailor, in police violence. She recalled how one of the children, Adnan, dreamed of becoming a doctor, inspired by the ideals of the Indian Constitution. This story, she said, illustrated how the Constitution was meant to protect and empower citizens.
Moreover, Priyanka Gandhi strongly backed the opposition’s demand for a national caste census, stressing its importance for creating policies that address the needs of all sections of society. She accused the ruling BJP of trivializing this demand, referring to Prime Minister Modi’s comments about Congress allegedly robbing people of their wealth, including their gold and mangalsutras. In contrast, she pointed out that figures like Indira Gandhi and her mother had sacrificed their gold for the country, reinforcing the idea that the real issue was the need to assess and address the plight of marginalized communities through proper data from a caste census.
Through these remarks, Priyanka Gandhi sought to position the opposition as defenders of the Constitution and advocates for social justice, while challenging the ruling government’s stance on key issues like caste-based data and the Constitution’s future.
