Govt abolishes State Waqf board in AP
In a significant political move, the NDA-led government of Andhra Pradesh, under Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu, has dissolved the State Waqf Board, which was constituted by the previous YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government.
The decision follows the High Court’s stay on the election of the board’s Chairperson and legal challenges regarding the constitutionality of the 2023 Government Order (G.O.). In the notification issued by the Minorities Welfare Department, the government emphasized that the move was made to ensure good governance, safeguard Waqf properties, and streamline the functioning of the board.
“After careful consideration of the observations made by the Hon’ble High Court…and in the interest of maintaining good governance, protection of Waqf properties, and ensuring the smooth functioning of the Waqf Board, the Government hereby withdraws G.O.Ms.No.47, dated 21.10.2023, with immediate effect,” it stated.
