Guillain-Barré Syndrome
Maharashtra reported its first suspected death due to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), an immunological nerve disorder, as the number of cases in Pune crossed 100, health officials confirmed on Monday.
The deceased, a 40-year-old man from Solapur district, reportedly contracted the disease in Pune before succumbing to complications. This marks a concerning development in the state’s fight against the rare condition.
Case Details
According to Dr. Sanjiv Thakur, Dean of Solapur Government Medical College, the man was admitted to a private hospital on January 18 after presenting with symptoms such as breathlessness, weakness in his lower limbs, and diarrhea. Despite receiving ventilator support intermittently, he passed away on Sunday.
The case was later referred to the Solapur government hospital for further investigation.
Rising GBS Cases in Maharashtra
MH has witnessed a sharp rise in GBS cases, with the total count reaching 101 by Sunday. The affected include 68 males and 33 females, with 16 patients currently on ventilator support.
A state health department official described the disease as a rare condition causing sudden numbness and muscle weakness. Common symptoms include severe limb weakness, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal issues.
About Guillain-Barré Syndrome
GBS is an autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nerves. This can lead to varying degrees of paralysis and can become life-threatening if respiratory muscles are affected. The exact cause of GBS remains unknown, but it is often preceded by an infection, such as respiratory or gastrointestinal illness.
