In light of concerns over potential law and order disruptions following the recent murder of former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique in Mumbai, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has reassured the public that any violence or politically motivated crimes will not be tolerated. Addressing these concerns while announcing election dates for Maharashtra and Jharkhand, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar emphasized that the authorities will be directed to ensure that such incidents do not occur.
Rajiv Kumar stated that once the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is enforced, the ECI will take a firm stance against violence of any kind, especially crimes involving political figures. He assured that violence like the recent killing of Siddique will be a “no-go area” for the commission and strict measures will be taken to prevent any such events during the election period.
Siddique, a prominent political figure associated with Ajit Pawar’s faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), was shot dead outside his son Zeeshan Siddique’s Bandra East office. Three attackers fired six bullets at him, with four hitting the former three-time MLA. The Election Commission has now vowed to ensure strict law enforcement to prevent any further political violence as the state heads into elections.
