The Election Commission of India has announced the dates for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections. Voting will take place on February 5, with results to be declared on February 8. The election will cover 70 Assembly constituencies, of which 12 are reserved for specific categories. A total of 13,033 polling stations will be set up for voters in Delhi, which includes over 1.55 crore eligible voters.
The election will be held in a single phase, and the last date for filing nominations is January 17, with the withdrawal deadline on January 20. Following the announcement of the election schedule, the model code of conduct has come into effect in Delhi.
Key Highlights:
- Over 2 lakh first-time voters will cast their ballots.
- Special arrangements will be made for elderly voters and persons with disabilities, ensuring easy access to polling booths.
- Voters over 85 years old will have the option to cast their vote at home.
Both major political parties have already started gearing up for the election. AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal urged party workers to prepare diligently, highlighting that the election is a battle between “the politics of work and the politics of abuses.” Meanwhile, BJP President welcomed the announcement, urging voters to choose a government focused on the development of Delhi under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guidance.
In the press conference, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar addressed concerns regarding EVM manipulation, stating that the machines are tamper-proof and cannot be hacked. He also clarified that any allegations about changes to the voter lists are thoroughly investigated, and due processes are followed for any adjustments.
The election promises to be competitive, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) seeking a third consecutive term, while the BJP aims to gain ground. The Congress will also contest independently, targeting both AAP and BJP.
