The Delhi Government is gearing up to implement a congestion charge on vehicles entering the city during peak hours, aiming to alleviate traffic jams and reduce pollution. The system will use FASTag technology and automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) for efficient collection of the charges. The focus will be on vehicles entering from border areas during the busiest times of the day.
The proposed charges will be enforced between 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM in the morning, and from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM in the evening, targeting 13 major entry points that frequently experience heavy traffic. The goal is to discourage the use of personal vehicles during these hours, pushing for cleaner transportation options.
Exemptions under this plan include two-wheelers and electric vehicles, part of the government’s initiative to encourage green transportation. Vehicles meeting BS6 pollution norms may also receive certain incentives, promoting more eco-friendly travel.
Inspired by successful models from cities like London and Singapore, where congestion charges have helped reduce traffic and improve air quality, Delhi officials hope this plan will have a similar effect. By cutting down on vehicular emissions, the scheme could motivate more people to switch to public transport or adopt electric vehicles.
This isn’t Delhi’s first attempt at introducing congestion charges. A similar proposal was made in 2018, targeting 21 high-traffic zones across the city, such as Hauz Khas Metro, ITO intersection, and the Aurobindo Chowk-Andheria More route.
