Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh made history on Thursday by becoming the youngest-ever chess World Champion after defeating Ding Liren of China in the decisive Game 14 of the 2024 World Chess Championship in Singapore. With the match nearing a draw, defending champion Ding Liren made a critical mistake by moving his rook adjacent to his king, which opened the door for Gukesh to capitalize on the blunder. Had the game ended in a draw, the championship would have been decided through tie-breaks the following day.
At just 18 years, 8 months, and 14 days, Gukesh shattered the record previously held by Garry Kasparov, who won the title at 22 years, 6 months, and 27 days. With this remarkable achievement, Gukesh also became only the second World Chess Champion from India, following Viswanathan Anand, who won the title four times.
