In a speech during the ongoing Winter Session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis praised his deputy, Ajit Pawar, stating, “You will be the Chief Minister someday.” Fadnavis acknowledged Ajit Pawar’s rising political stature and his ambitions, encouraging him by adding, “You are called ‘permanent deputy CM’… but my wishes are with you.” This comment came in the context of Ajit Pawar’s role in the government following his return to the BJP-led coalition after splitting from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in 2023.
Fadnavis further shared that he, Ajit Pawar, and Chief Minister Eknath Shinde would work around the clock in shifts, with Ajit Pawar handling morning duties, Fadnavis managing from noon to midnight, and Shinde, known for his late-night work, covering the night hours. This reflects the dynamic working style within the state leadership as they tackle the ongoing responsibilities.
Ajit Pawar’s political journey has been marked by his chief ministerial aspirations, especially after splitting from the NCP and joining forces with the BJP-led alliance. Despite initial setbacks in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, his faction has since made a strong comeback, winning a significant number of seats in the recent Maharashtra assembly elections. This political realignment has strengthened the Mahayuti alliance, which secured over 230 of the 288 assembly seats, while the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi only managed 46.
