A cyclonic storm is expected to form in the Bay of Bengal near the Odisha coast on October 23, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday. IMD sources have also indicated that a low-pressure area is likely to develop in the Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours.
On October 20, IMD reported that an upper air cyclonic circulation, initially over the central Andaman Sea, shifted to the north Andaman Sea by early morning (0530 hours IST) and remained there until mid-morning (0830 hours IST). This system is expected to trigger the formation of a low-pressure area over the East-central Bay of Bengal and the nearby north Andaman Sea within 24 hours.
The system is predicted to move west-northwestwards, intensifying into a depression by the morning of October 22 and further strengthening into a cyclonic storm by October 23, 2024. Following that, it is likely to continue moving northwestwards and is projected to reach the northwest Bay of Bengal near the Odisha-West Bengal coast by the morning of October 24.
