Controversy Over Leaked CAG Report Ahead of Delhi Elections
The BJP and AAP are locked in a heated battle over the authenticity and findings of a leaked Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report related to Delhi’s controversial excise policy. The report, which has yet to be officially released, allegedly points to significant lapses and violations under the leadership of former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia. These revelations have sparked a fresh political firestorm ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections on February 5.
AAP Questions Authenticity of Report
AAP leader Sanjay Singh cast doubt on the credibility of the purported CAG report, questioning whether its findings were fabricated at the BJP office. Singh’s remarks came after the report, which has surfaced partially in public domains, alleged that the Delhi government’s excise policy led to a loss of over Rs 2,026 crore. This includes Rs 890 crore due to failures in re-tendering surrendered liquor licenses and an additional Rs 941 crore lost due to exemptions granted to zonal licensees.
BJP Accuses AAP of Corruption
The BJP has seized upon the report’s alleged findings, accusing the AAP government of gross mismanagement and corruption. BJP leader Anurag Thakur questioned the AAP’s record, pointing to issues such as broken roads, dirty water, rising electricity bills, garbage piles, and pollution. He claimed that the people of Delhi were growing increasingly frustrated with the AAP’s governance and were eager to vote for change.
Congress Joins the Fray
Congress has also entered the debate, with Delhi Congress President Devender Yadav criticizing the delay in tabling the CAG report in the Assembly. Yadav suggested that there might be a deal between the BJP and AAP to suppress the report. Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit further accused the Kejriwal government of running a “clear scam” with the excise policy, alleging that it drained government funds.
As the election campaign intensifies, the controversy over the excise policy and the CAG report continues to dominate political discourse in Delhi, with accusations and counter-accusations flying between the ruling AAP, BJP, and opposition parties.
