In the aftermath of the Maharashtra elections, which saw the BJP-led Mahayuti score a resounding victory with 230 seats in the 288-member Assembly, Shiv Sena (UBT) senior leader Ambadas Danve has blamed Congress’s “overconfidence” for the loss. Danve, the Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council, pointed out that the Congress’s attitude during seat-sharing negotiations hurt the prospects of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance. Congress contested 103 seats but only managed to win 16, while the Shiv Sena (UBT), which contested 89 seats, won 20 seats. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) contested 87 seats but only secured 10.
Danve also emphasized that the MVA should have projected Uddhav Thackeray as its Chief Ministerial candidate, a move he believes would have strengthened the alliance’s position. His remarks come amid ongoing discussions within the Mahayuti alliance regarding the next Chief Minister, with the BJP pushing for the position after securing the highest number of seats among its allies.

Referring to the Congress’s performance, Danve remarked that the party’s “overconfidence” was evident, particularly after their success in the recent Lok Sabha elections, where they won 13 seats—more than any other MVA ally. This success led to the Congress bargaining aggressively during seat-sharing talks, causing friction within the alliance.
As the BJP now looks to settle the leadership question in Maharashtra, with Eknath Shinde stepping back to accept the BJP’s decision on the Chief Minister post, Danve also took a subtle dig at the Congress. He remarked, “They were getting ready with suit and tie even before the results.”
On the topic of former Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde, whose rebellion split the party, Danve criticized the BJP for using individuals like Shinde for their benefit and then discarding them. He remarked, “The BJP has many Shindes in several states. The BJP uses and throws them away.”
Shiv Sena (UBT) is now focused on building its strength and plans to contest all 288 seats in the next state election, as Danve stated that some Sena (UBT) candidates have already pointed out the need to focus on strengthening the party organization.
