In a tense incident, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar’s helicopter made an emergency landing in Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh district today. The helicopter was carrying Mr. Kumar along with Uttarakhand’s additional Chief Election Officer, Vijay Kumar Jogdande. Fortunately, all passengers on board are reported to be safe, according to a statement from the Uttarakhand Government via news agency ANI.
This event unfolded on the same day Mr. Kumar had announced the bypoll for the Kedarnath assembly seat in Uttarakhand. The seat, which falls under the Pauri Garhwal Lok Sabha constituency, has been vacant since July following the death of MLA Shaila Rawat, who had won it in the 2022 assembly polls on a BJP ticket.
According to Mr. Jogdande, the notification for the Kedarnath bypoll will be issued on October 22, with nominations closing on October 29. The counting of votes is scheduled for November 23.
