The ongoing controversy involves Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, who sparked sharp reactions after she arrived in Parliament with a handbag displaying a “Palestine” tag. This move was criticized by the BJP, which termed it “crass communal posturing.” The debate intensified following her vocal stance on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and her previous description of Israeli military actions as “barbaric and inhuman.”
BJP leaders, including MP Anurag Thakur, questioned why Priyanka Gandhi chose to make a statement on Palestine while not addressing issues such as the plight of Hindus in Bangladesh. Amit Malviya, head of the BJP’s IT cell, accused her of using “communal virtue signalling” under the guise of advocating against patriarchy. Other BJP leaders suggested that such actions were attempts to gain attention after being rejected by the public.
In response, Priyanka Gandhi defended herself, urging her critics to focus on addressing the atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh rather than making “stupid” remarks.
India’s stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict remains consistent, with support for a two-state solution. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reiterated India’s commitment to a sovereign Palestinian state in Parliament.
