In response to a recent surge in hoax bomb threats affecting nearly 100 flights since October 14, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu announced stricter measures aimed at ensuring aviation safety. Addressing the media, Naidu emphasized that safety remains the government’s top priority and revealed that steps are being taken to amend aviation rules, potentially placing individuals who make such threats on a no-fly list.
Naidu stressed that even though these threats have turned out to be false, aviation authorities follow strict international protocols. In light of the growing number of threats, multiple meetings with stakeholders have been conducted to discuss rule changes in the Aircraft (Security) Rules. The amendments could see hoax callers identified and barred from flying.
Additionally, the government is considering amendments to the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against the Safety of Civil Aviation (SUASCA) Act, 1982, which would make issuing hoax bomb threats a cognizable offense, subject to fines and punishment. Consultations for these changes are underway with other ministries.
