Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav has clarified his support for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) over the Congress in Delhi, stating that the basic principle behind the opposition alliance is to strengthen regional parties where they are strong and capable of fighting the BJP. Yadav emphasized that the INDIA alliance remains intact, and that the common goal is to defeat the BJP.
While speaking to reporters in Haridwar, where he was immersing the ashes of his uncle Rajpal Yadav in the Ganga, Akhilesh Yadav explained, “Strengthening the hands of regional parties wherever they are strong and can fight the BJP is the key principle of the opposition alliance.” He went on to say, “AAP is strong in Delhi, and that is why we are supporting it.”
Yadav also recalled that during the formation of the INDIA alliance, Nitish Kumar had spoken to leaders from all parties, stressing the importance of bolstering regional parties in states where they are strong. Yadav reaffirmed this idea, stating, “We must support whichever party is strong and can challenge the BJP. In Delhi, AAP is stronger than Congress, so we should support AAP. Our ultimate goal is to defeat the BJP, whether it’s Congress, Samajwadi Party, or AAP.”
On the issue of the Union Home Ministry granting sanction to the Enforcement Directorate to prosecute AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal in the excise policy-linked money laundering case, Yadav criticized the BJP’s governance style, calling it dictatorial. He said, “BJP governments work like that—wherever they are in power, they rule in a dictatorial manner.”
Finally, Akhilesh Yadav spoke about his spiritual connection with the Ganga, saying he would visit the Maha Kumbh congregation in Prayagraj whenever “Mother Ganga” calls him. He also mentioned having taken a dip in the Ganga at Haridwar during Makar Sankranti.
