Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi
Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi addressed the media today regarding the ongoing security situation in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), revealing that nearly 60% of the terrorists killed in the region last year were of Pakistani origin. He further stated that about 80% of the terrorists still active in the region are also Pakistanis. This highlights the continued infiltration attempts from across the border, particularly along the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border (IB) sector.
Gen Dwivedi emphasized that despite these challenges, the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir is “firmly under control,” with the ceasefire along the LoC, which has been effective since February 2021, holding steady. However, he also noted that the terror infrastructure across the region remains intact, and infiltration attempts, including through drones smuggling war-like stores and narcotics, continue.
In recent months, there has been an increase in terrorist activities, particularly in North Kashmir and the Doda-Kishtwar belt. Despite this, Gen Dwivedi reassured that the overall violence levels are being managed effectively. He pointed to the peaceful conduct of the Amarnath Yatra, which saw over five lakh pilgrims this year, as a positive indicator of the improving security situation. Additionally, the smooth conduct of the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections also reflects the growing stability in the region. He highlighted the emerging shift from terrorism to tourism, which is gradually taking shape in the region.
Turning to the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), Gen Dwivedi described it as “stable” but “sensitive,” following the disengagement of Indian and Chinese forces from the last two friction points in eastern Ladakh. He also mentioned that patrolling and grazing have resumed in traditional areas like Depsang and Demchok.
Gen Dwivedi reaffirmed that the Indian Army’s deployment along both the LoC and LAC is “balanced and robust,” capable of addressing any situation that may arise. He emphasized the Army’s focus on bolstering border infrastructure and enhancing capabilities to ensure the security of India’s frontiers.
