On Christmas morning, dense fog and poor visibility in New Delhi led to major disruptions in the city’s train services, with 20 trains delayed, including important services like the Mumbai Central Rajdhani Express and Dakshin Express.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the city’s temperature was recorded at 10 degrees Celsius, with visibility dropping to just 100 meters at 5:30 a.m. due to the thick fog.
Delayed Trains
The delays impacted several key train services. These included the Mumbai Central Rajdhani Express traveling from New Delhi to Mumbai, the Durg-Hazrat Nizammudin Express running from Durg to Delhi, Dakshin Express from Delhi to Hyderabad, the Duronto Express, and the Jabalpur-Hazrat Nizammudin Gondwana Express traveling from Jabalpur to Delhi, among others.
The dense fog, coupled with a cold temperature, compounded the problem and led to further delays in train schedules across the city.
Weather and Air Quality
Locals reported that the cold was severe, and many had to rely on bonfires to keep warm. “The temperature has dropped a lot due to the rain that took place yesterday. We have to use bonfires to keep ourselves warm,” a local resident told ANI.
Additionally, the air quality in New Delhi worsened significantly, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 333, which falls under the “very poor” category, as per the Central Pollution Control Board at 8 a.m. The AQI in other areas was similarly high, with readings of 360 in Anand Vihar, 372 in Ashok Vihar, 362 in Bayana, and 324 at the CRRI Mathura Road.
The AQI scale ranges from 0 to 500, where an AQI between 0-50 is considered good, 51-100 is satisfactory, 101-200 is moderate, 201-300 is poor, 301-400 is very poor, and 401-500 is severe.
Impact of Pollution
“The pollution and the winters both have become very harsh. It is taking a toll on people as they are suffering from breathing difficulties…” another local shared.
The situation was worsened by the moderate rain on December 24, which added to the winter chill and further intensified the cold and pollution in the city.
The ongoing fog and pollution in the capital continue to create significant challenges for residents and commuters alike, affecting air quality and transportation services.
